Mallorca's Portuguese defender Nunes rose highest to meet a free-kick in the 82nd minute, making it 10 wins from 10 for Mallorca at their Ono Estadi. The result was harsh on Villarreal and new coach Juan Carlos Garrido after they had created the clearer chances in a poor match.

Mallorca have 37 points from 21 games, one ahead of Sevilla, after the Andalusians suffered a miserable night at Real Zaragoza losing 2-1 and finishing the game with nine men.

Sevilla rested players with one eye on Wednesday's King's Cup semi-final second leg away to Getafe, but fell behind when Matteo Contini scored from a scramble at a corner in the 31st minute.

Frederic Kanoute volleyed them level soon after but Alvaro Negredo headed a free-kick into his own net just before the break. Spain striker Negredo's night went from bad to worse when he kicked Contini as the two tussled for the ball and was shown a straight red card in the 81st minute.

His team mate Marius Stankevicius soon followed for a professional foul. Zaragoza had striker Adrian Colunga sent off at the end but the win hauled them out of the relegation places up to 17th.

Fernando Llorente scored twice as Athletic Bilbao came from behind to win 3-2 and see off a Xerez side who deserved much more for their efforts at San Mames.

Despite trailing to Iker Muniain's early goal, the Primera Division's bottom side responded valiantly to take a half-time lead thanks to strikes from Vicente Moreno and Mario Bermejo.

But Spain forward Llorente brought Athletic back on level terms before hitting the winner four minutes from time to snatch the points for the home side.

Osasuna continued their climb up the table with a slender 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Tenerife at Estadio Reyno de Navarra.

Carlos Aranda got the only goal of the game in the 48th minute as he fired home from Javier Camunas' pass for Los Rojillos.

Almeria showed real character to come from behind and score a 3-1 victory over out-of-form Sporting Gijon which boosts their hopes of avoiding relegation from La Liga.

Diego Castro gave the visitors the lead but Albert Crusat levelled the scores soon after and Domingo Cisma gave the hosts the lead shortly before half-time.

Santos Guilherme wrapped up the points with the third goal 10 minutes from time as Juan Manuel Lillo's side took advantage of a full-strength squad in a game of three dismissals.

Deportivo Coruna had Pablo Alvarez sent off in the first half of their 0-0 draw away to Malaga and stay sixth with 35 points.

In the late game, Cup semi-finalists Atletico Madrid and Racing Santander drew 1-1 at the Sardinero. Diego Forlan gave the visitors an early lead but former Atletico player Corsa brought Santander level 12 minutes later.
