Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed that forward Eidur Gudjohnsen has joined the club on loan from Monaco until the end of the season.

Gudjohnsen, who previously played in the Premier League with Bolton and Chelsea, joined Monaco in the summer after three years at Barcelona, but has failed to make an impact in Ligue 1.

Gudjohnsen had also attracted attention from West Ham, but Redknapp confirmed the 31-year-old preferred a switch to White Hart Lane and he completed a medical on Thursday.

Redknapp said: "He's joined us and he's a player we've always admired. He's a player we have been chasing for a couple of weeks. West Ham came in but before the takeover we were hot on the trail of Eidur and had contact with his people.

"He can play several positions. He's a fantastic footballer, a clever footballer. It was his decision. I rang him. I left a message saying, 'Eidur, if you are down the road with West Ham, Zola and Steve Clarke are friends of yours. Don't fall out with them.'

"I get on great with David Sullivan and I don't want any hassle with him either, but he (Eidur) came back and said, 'It's my choice. I want to come to Tottenham.'

"He can play several positions. He had a great spell in midfield with Chelsea. He gives you options with your system. You don't play at Barcelona and in the Champions League unless you are a top player."

The move has fuelled speculation that Roman Pavlyuchenko will leave the club but, while Redknapp has confirmed Spurs are in talks with Birmingham over a deal, he said: "We're not keen to sell him. We're happy with him. Technically he's a terrific player.''

Redknapp also confirmed that talks are underway with Portsmouth to try to land defender Younes Kaboul and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Kaboul, rated at £10million, was taken to Fratton Park by Redknapp in August 2008 having joined Tottenham the previous summer. It is believed Spurs are still owed £2 million from that deal.

"We're not trying to buy him on the cheap," Redknapp said. "We're paying whatever the going rate is for him.

"Kaboul can play several positions. He can play right back, holding midfield and centre half. He's a player at last realising his potential. I watched him several times at Auxerre and I thought he would be in the French team on a regular basis by now. I would be keen to bring him back if the deal is right for everybody."
