Former Parma coach Nevio Scala has revealed he is interested in becoming the new manager of the Scotland national team.

The Italian was on the shortilst to become manager before Berti Vogts disastrous appointment in 2002 and was also being considered when George Burley took charge.

The post is now vacant again after Burley was sacked by the Scottish Football Association following a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign.

And Scala - who won the Cup Winners' Cup, UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup during a successful spell with Parma in the 1990s - has admitted he would love the opportunity to try to guide Scotland to the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine.

"I have made my interest known to the Scottish FA. I have always had a great respect for Scottish football and have an affinity for the country," Scala said.

"I would want to have a Scottish coach working beside me and I believe I could do a good job. I've every confidence in my own ability and I am still hungry to be a successful coach. Why not with Scotland?

"In my career, I have coached in several European countries and I have always had no difficulties with language or settling in. We all speak the universal language of football."

The 62-year-old has a wealth of European experience, having also managed Borussia Dortmund, Be_ikta_ Shakhtar Donetsk, Spartak Moscow and Reggina - his first job in Italy.

Scala is now a respected radio pundit in Italy, but would be available to start with Scotland immediately having been out of work since being sacked as Spartak Moscow boss in 2004.
