Lampard sustained the injury in training on Thursday and will leave Doha to undergo further treatment with his club side, Chelsea, at their Cobham training facility.

"We can confirm that Frank Lampard picked up an injury to his left thigh whilst training today and will be returning home this evening,'' said an FA spokesman. "There will be no further call-ups to the squad."

Lampard's withdrawal means that Fabio Capello only has 21 players available for England's game against the five-time world champions, with a whole host of regular first-team players absent including Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole and David Beckham.

More pressingly for Chelsea, news of Lampard's setback comes in the wake of injuries to Cole and fellow full back Jose Bosingwa that have both been confirmed in recent days.

There is no indication yet as to how long Lampard's recuperation period will be. Chelsea's first game following the international break is a home Premier League game against Wolves on November 21.
