Struggling Seagulls turn to Poyet and Taricco

November 10, 2009

Brighton have confirmed former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet as their new manager.

The 41-year-old Uruguayan has been out of work since leaving his role as assistant manager at Spurs in October 2008. Poyet, who has also held coaching roles at Swindon and Leeds, has signed a deal until the end of next season and will be assisted by former Tottenham team-mate Mauricio Taricco.

"Gus is one of the best up-and-coming young coaches in this country," Brighton chairman Tony Bloom said. "We are delighted to give him his first opportunity in management.

"His credentials are exceptional and all of the reports we have had on his coaching ability are outstanding. I am certain he will be a big success at the Albion, and I would like to take the opportunity to welcome both Gus and Mauricio to the club."

Brighton, who are currently 20th in League One, sacked former Yeovil boss Russell Slade at the start of November.
