November 9, 2009

Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano believes his side's performance against Villarreal is the standard they need to reach if they want to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the Primera Division title this season.

Sevilla recorded their seventh win in 10 league matches after fighting back from a 2-1 deficit to claim a 3-2 victory at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Sunday.

That result has left Manolo Jimenez's side in third spot, four points behind leaders Barcelona and three adrift of second-placed Madrid, and Luis Fabiano believes it was a big night for his team, not just due to the win but because of their performance.

"Both teams were in very good form, it was a spectacular match and we suffered a bit. But, in the end, we took three very important points to continue right up there at the top of the table,'' the Brazil international told Canal Plus.

"Sevilla have to maintain this level to fight for La Liga.''

Luis Fabiano struck two of his side's goals on what was his 29th birthday, opening the scoring in the ninth minute and then drawing Sevilla level in the 61st minute after Villarreal had gone ahead through efforts from Robert Pires (29) and David Fuster (59).

Substitute Frederic Kanoute then settled the game in Sevilla`s favour when he netted the winning goal in the 66th minute - just three minutes after coming off the bench.

Luis Fabiano`s brace took his tally in the league this season to four, leaving him four behind Valencia`s David Villa in the race to win the Pichichi (top goalscorer), and three adrift of Barcelona duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lionel Messi.

"I`m very happy to help Sevilla by scoring goals, I`m going through a great moment and I have to stay at this level. Hopefully I can be fighting with the great players from Barcelona, Villa and others for the Pichichi,'' he said.

The Brazil international, who has been regularly linked with moves to some of European football`s biggest sides over the last few years, also insisted he was enjoying life at the Andalusian club and was not looking for a move.

"I`m very happy here and I`m not thinking about leaving now. Things are going very well for me at Sevilla at the moment and it`s not going through my head to leave for another team,'' he added.
