Manchester City's Kolo Toure brings the scores level
The newly-promoted Clarets had taken a two-goal lead through a Graham Alexander penalty and a Steven Fletcher tap-in but once Shaun Wright-Phillips' deflected strike had got one back for City before the break the home side needed only 12 second half minutes to take the lead.
Defender Kolo Toure scored the equaliser and when Craig Bellamy swept home in the 58th minute it looked like there would be only one winner. But, with only three minutes remaining in the match at Eastlands, McDonald scored against the run of play to earn a point for Burnley.
Arsenal crushed Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 at Molineux to move into second place in the Premier League and take their goal tally to 36 in just 11 games.
Two own goals from Wolves defenders Ronald Zubar and Jody Craddock gave the Gunners a comfortable lead and Cesc Fábregas made it 3-0 before half-time. After the break Andrei Arshavin increased the score before Craddock got a consolation goal at the correct end.
Striker Jason Roberts came off the bench to hit a late double as Blackburn Rovers came from behind to claim three priceless points against fellow strugglers Portsmouth with a 3-1 victory in Saturday's basement battle.
Jamie O'Hara had put Pompey in front with a 30-yard effort in the 15th minute, but things changed after Sam Allardyce rang the changes at the break.
Roberts steered home a 52nd-minute equaliser, before Ryan Nelsen headed Rovers in front with a rare strike in the 73rd minute. Roberts then wrapped up the points with five minutes to go.
Sunderland striker Darren Bent missed a penalty on his return to White Hart Lane as Tottenham Hotspur secured a 2-0 victory through goals from Robbie Keane and Tom Huddlestone.
Bent had the chance to level for the visitors against the side he left in controversial circumstances but Heurelho Gomes saved his weak spot-kick. Huddlestone grabbed his third of the season with an effort that crashed in off the crossbar, doubling the lead after Keane's early strike.
Aston Villa eased to a 5-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers. Ashley Young gave Villa a fifth-minute lead and Gabriel Agbonlahor doubled the lead two minutes before the break, only for substitute Johan Elmander to reduce the deficit on the whistle.
However, second-half goals from John Carew (53), James Milner (72) and Carlos Cuellar (75) made it a comfortable win for Martin O'Neill's men.
