Mikel Arteta's spell on the sidelines has been extended.

The Spanish playmaker, who snapped his cruciate ligament playing against Newcastle in February, has had to undergo a procedure to remove an infection from the same knee and is now recovering.

David Moyes revealed the news ahead of his side's Europa League clash with Benfica.

"Mikel has needed to have a 'wash out' on his knee after doctors found an infection," Moyes said.

"It is a setback for him. However we can't say how long it has put him back."
