Bassong injured his hamstring in injury time of the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, causing his manager Harry Redknapp another headache after an afternoon in which Spurs looked vulnerable in defence.
And given that Bassong has started all 11 of his club's Premier League games this season, news of his absence will be a disappointment to Redknapp as he aims to maintain the club's challenge for Europe.
After his injury was diagnosed, Bassong spoke of his disappointment at the problem and also Tottenham's poor performance at the Emirates.
"It's not good news. It's a hamstring. I'll be out maybe four or five weeks. It just feels like my muscle is gone," Bassong said in the Daily Mirror. "It was really not a good day for me or the club or the fans. It was the worst day of the season."
