Alkmaar need extra time to beat amateurs

October 28, 2009

AZ Alkmaar survived a scare against Spakenburg in the third round of the KNVB Beker on Wednesday night, needing extra time to see off the amateur side 5-2.

Thijs Houwing fired the visitors in front after six minutes, but goals from Pontus Wernbloom and Stijn Schaars looked to have sent AZ through until Christy Bonevacia's last-minute equaliser took the match beyond the 90 minutes.

Ronald Koeman's men then came to life with strikes from Wernbloom, Nick van der Velden and Mounir El Hamdaoui.

PSV Eindhoven beat top-flight rivals Roda JC 2-0 thanks to goals from Stanislav Manolev and Jonathan Reis, while another all-Eredivisie encounter saw FC Groningen trounce Vitesse Arnhem 5-1.

Thomas Enevoldsen, Leandro Bacuna, Fredrik Stenman, Andreas Granqvist and Goran Lovre all found the target for Groningen with Onur Kaya grabbing a late consolation for the hosts.

Luuk de Jong scored twice as Eredivisie leaders FC Twente ended the challenge of amateurs Capelle 3-0, and Heerenveen were 4-2 winners at home to Jupiler League side RBC Roosendaal.

An extra-time goal from Youssef El Akchaoui secured a 2-1 for NEC Nijmegen over Excelsior.
