Worst goalkeeping errors

As Dida and Iker Casillas showed during Wednesday night's Champions League clash between AC Milan and Real Madrid they can mess up with the best of them. Below we look at a number of high-profile goalkeeping errors from over the years.

Dida, AC Milan v Leeds, 2000

The Brazilian has previous, as he proved when he dropped the ball from a long range shot from Lee Bowyer, only to see it cross the line behind him. Setting the reputation of Brazilian international goalkeepers back 50 years, he was also criticised for his reaction when a fan came on the pitch and touch him in 2007 when playing against Celtic.

Peter Enckelman, Birmingham City v Aston Villa, 2002

This was an odd goal, but it was also an error. In the white-hot atmosphere of the Midlands derby, Enckelman managed to let Olof Mellberg's throw-in under his foot and then watched as it trickled into the net. He was consoled by a nice supporter afterwards though.

Rene Higuita, Colombia v Cameroon, 1990

Famed for his personality, Colombian Rene Higuita will always be remembered for his scorpion kick at Wembley in 1995. However, he also showed that goalkeepers should never try and dribble the ball, with Roger Milla taking full advantage.

Massimo Taibi, Manchester United v Southampton, 1999

The Italian slipped under the radar after this mistake, as he let the ball squirm under his body and over the line against Southampton. He pulled the United shirt on just four times, but conceded 11 goals in the process and was never seen again at Old Trafford after blaming his studs for his error.

Paul Robinson, Croatia v England, 2006

Once regarded as the best young goalkeeper in England, Paul Robinson's career has waned in the last few years. It's difficult to pick the exact moment when Robbo's fortunes began to turn, but an airshot against Croatia certainly didn't help matters.

David James, Wolfsburg v Portsmouth, 2008

David 'Calamity' James is currently England's No.1, but he has a history of making some rash decisions. A mistimed pass of the highest calibre came against Wolfsburg, as he appeared to confuse his defender with opposition striker Zvjezdan Misimovic. A mistake which cost Pompey their place in the UEFA Cup.

Fabian Barthez, Manchester United v Arsenal, 2001

The Frenchman's career at Old Trafford lasted a few more years after this display, but it is easy to see why he was nicknamed 'The Clown'. Under little pressure, he sent a clearance straight to the unmarked Thierry Henry at the edge of the area, who rounded him and scored. Four minutes later, coming out to gather a through ball from Patrick Vieira, he unaccountably let it through his hands, enabling Henry to run on and score again. Gunners fans chanted 'Give it to Barthez' afterwards.

Vanina Correa, Argentina v Germany, 2007

Two risible own goals by the Argentina stopper in the Women's World Cup's opening match, saw an 11-0 drubbing devalue the competition before it had started. The decision to take the goals away from Correa and hand them to the attacker who had last touched the ball was also as laughable.
