Veteran Socceroos dust off the boots

October 10, 2009

A team of Socceroo greats have shaken the dust off their boots and oiled up their creaky joints to record their first win in nearly 20 years at the World Masters Games.

The Olderoos, which boasts more than 400 international games for Australia, downed the Eastern Lions Soccer Club 2-1 just hours before their successors took on the Netherlands.

Goalkeeper Jeff Olver said although there's going to be some sore bodies among the team in the morning, the ball was moved around as well it had back in their heydays of the 1980s and 90s.

"We knocked the ball around really well," he said.

"To be fair to them they dropped off, in new terminology they parked the bus, but we kept possession really well.

"This is the first time a lot of these guys have played in a long time, in some cases you're talking close to 20 years, so it was very good."

The side includes three former captains in Charlie Yankos, Paul Wade and Alex Tobin plus Oscar Crino and Graham Jennings, who were part of the 1988 Olympic squad.

The 48-year-old Olver said standing in goals in the green and gold once more brought back memories, but flashbacks were not good enough to save the lone ball which beat him.

After their win in Sydney's north west the side quickly piled into a mini-bus to make the journey down the M4 to cheer on the Socceroos against the Dutch.
