Van der Sar has not featured for United yet this season after breaking two bones in his left hand during a pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich.
In his absence, Ben Foster has been installed as Sir Alex Ferguson's stand-in number one but the England international has failed to fully convince, looking culpable when Kenwyne Jones put Sunderland 2-1 in front at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Van der Sar's return will therefore be welcomed by the English champions with the 38-year-old pencilled in to start in the second-string tie against Everton in Widnes.
The Dutch 'keeper joined United from Fulham in 2001 and has made 132 Premier League appearances for the club.
