Internacional knocked out of Copa Sudamericana

October 1, 2009

Defending champions Internacional have been knocked out of the Copa Sudamericana with a 1-0 defeat by Universidad de Chile in the last-16.

The Chileans celebrated a 2-1 aggregate win against their Brazilian opponents thanks to a 37th-minute header by Juan Manuel Olivera after a Walter Montillo free-kick.

The Chileans play Fluminense of Brazil or Peru's Alianza Atletico, who conclude the tie on Friday having drawn 2-2 in the first leg.

''We gave away a goal from a dead ball. We are very disappointed and sad. We'll rest and aim for the national league from now on,'' said Inter defender Indio.

Internacional compatriots Botafogo had different fortunes as they progressed to the quarter-finals despite a 2-1 defeat at Ecuador's Emelec. The Rio de Janeiro side celebrated a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Andre Lima gave visitors Botafogo an early lead in the fifth minute with a header. However, Emelec defender Carlos Quinonez equalised seven minutes into the second half after a combined play with Franco Mendoza.

Finally, midfielder Jose Luis Quinonez gave Emelec a vain victory as he headed a Juan Pablo Raponi cross at the 57th.

In Peru, Argentinian giants San Lorenzo confirmed their superiority over hosts Cienciano with a 2-0 win to celebrate a 5-0 aggregate victory.

Cienciano, champions in 2003, were undone when unmarked Kily Gonzalez scored the winner in the 39th minute.

The Peruvian team also let slip an opportunity at the Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega as Pablo Migliore saved a penalty by Juan Cavallo. Gonzalo Rovira made it 2-0 with six minutes to go.

Kily Gonzalez commented: ''We have passed a very difficult test. I am happy because we are trying to get an identity and we try to get it on every field we play. Our fans may be excited.''

San Lorenzo are aiming to repeat their feat of winning the tournament in 2002 and play River Plate of Uruguay next.

The Uruguayans managed to hold Brazil's Vitoria in a 1-1 draw in Salvador to get the quarter-final berth thanks to the 4-1 first-leg win in Montevideo.

Fourty-one minutes into the second half, Vitoria took the lead thanks to an Elkeson goal, but Jorge Cordoba levelled the game in added-time.
