Asian Champions League: Umm Salal make semis

September 30, 2009

Umm Salal progressed to the semi-finals of the Asian Champions League as they held FC Seoul to a 1-1 draw in Wednesday's quarter-final second-leg clash and advanced 4-3 on aggregate.

The Qataris, who had secured a 3-2 win in the first leg, opened the scoring early in the first half through Ben Askar Aziz but Dejan Damjanovic equalised soon after to ensure a nervy encounter.

However, Umm Salal defended well at Seoul World Cup Stadium to hold the Koreans at bay and ensure their passage to the last four.

Stevo Restic's dramatic extra-time header completed a second-leg turnaround for Pohang Steelers as the South Korean side defeated Bunyodkor 4-1 for a 5-4 win on aggregate that secures their place in the semis.

A Denilson brace plus a Kim Jae-sung strike put Pohang in control following last week's 3-1 defeat to the Uzbeks in Tashkent. Bunyodkor substitute Victor Karpenko forced extra time, however, when he struck two minutes from time only for Ristic to grab the decisive goal 11 minutes into extra period.

Josh Kennedy's late strike secured a 3-1 second-leg win for Nagoya Grampus over J.League rivals Kawasaki Frontale that sends them through to the last four.

Kawasaki went into the game looking to defend their 2-1 win from the first leg but found themselves 2-0 down when Yoshizumi Ogawa and Maya Yoshida scored for Nagoya before Jong Tae-se reduced the deficit for the visitors before half-time.

The game looked to be heading for extra time but Australian Kennedy popped up to fire home with two minutes remaining and send Nagoya through. The victory also marked the first time Nagoya have beaten Kawasaki in their last 10 meetings.
