Russia: Spartak miss chance to close gap on Rubin

September 19, 2009

Spartak Moscow wasted the chance to close the gap on Russian Premier Liga leaders Rubin Kazan to three points as they lost 2-1 at Saturn Moscow.

Dmitri Loskov gave Saturn the lead after half an hour's play but Alex gave Spartak hope with a 52nd-minute penalty. However, they were only on terms for a minute as substitute Marko Topic made it 2-1 to Saturn.

The result means reigning champions Rubin lead the league by six points with a game in hand against Tom Tomsk.

Lokomotiv Moscow are now just two points behind Spartak in third after they beat FC Moscow 1-0 with a 45th-minute penalty from Russia forward Dmitry Sychev.

In the day's other game, Rostov drew 3-3 at home to Kuban Krasnodar. Artur Tlisov was on target twice for the visitors.
