Lee penalty miss denies Jeonbuk top spot

July 27, 2009

Lee Dong-gook missed a penalty as Jeonbuk Motors failed to go top of the K-League after being held to a 1-1 draw by Ulsan Horang-I.

Luis gave the hosts the lead after 13 minutes after Choi Tae-uk ran from inside his own half and crossed for the Brazilian to stroke the ball home from 15 yards out.

Ulsan were back on level terms five minutes before the break. Hyun Young-min's left-sided cross was headed past the despairing dive of Kwon Sun-tae by Lee Jin-ho.

Two minutes later, Jeonbuk had their best chance to restore their advantage as Hyun brought down Luis just inside the area.

Lee's low penalty was denied by Kim Young-kwang, however, and the game ended in a draw.

''I am sorry to my team-mates,'' said Lee after the game. ''But it is only one match in a season. It was hard to find space behind Ulsan's defence.''

Jeonbuk coach Choi Kang-hee felt that his team should have gone on to win after taking the lead.

''After we scored the opening goal, we didn't attack as well as we should have but the players tried their best,'' he said.

In the day's other fixture Daejeon Citizen and Gyeongnam FC played out a goalless draw.
