TROPHEE DES CHAMPIONS
Bordeaux beat Guingamp in French curtain raiser
Fernando Cavenaghi's first-half strike and a late second by Fernando allowed Bordeaux to beat Guingamp and retain the Trophee des Champions.
Argentina striker Cavenaghi drove home a powerful shot eight minutes before half-time to hand Les Girondins the lead and substitute Fernando added gloss with a stoppage-time effort at Montreal's Olympic Stadium.
It was the first time the French season's curtain-raiser had been held abroad and the 34,000 spectators that turned up saw Bordeaux control proceedings.
Victor Zvunka's underdogs, who play in Ligue 2, hardly threatened Cedric Carrasso in the Bordeaux goal.
Even without last season's central defensive lynchpin Souleymane Diawara, who left for Marseille over the summer, Les Girondins' defence was resolute.
The Ligue 1 side also had a greater cutting edge going forward and went ahead in the 37th minute.
Marouane Chamakh had moments earlier miscontrolled when clean through but his strike partner Cavenaghi showed the want-away Moroccan how it should be done.
A buccaneering run down the left by full-back Benoit Tremoulinas ended with him pulling the ball back for the Argentinian, who controlled and drilled a low shot in at the near post from 10 yards.
Imperious playmaker Yoann Gourcuff should have doubled Bordeaux's lead just before half-time but he blazed a left-foot shot over from six yards.
The second half saw Laurent Blanc's Les Girondins, who defeated Lyon on penalties in last year's Trophee des Champions, continue to dominate, Wendel and summer signing Jaroslav Plasil off target with half-chances.
They merited a second and it arrived a minute into injury time when Fernando poked in a close-range rebound after Gourcuff's low free-kick hit the post.
