Bohemians come close to Salzburg UCL upset

July 22, 2009

League of Ireland champions Bohemians came within three minutes of a famous aggregate victory in their Champions League qualifier before being dumped out by Patrick Jezek's agonising header.

The Gypsies were on course to stun the highly-fancied Austrian title winners on away goals after last week's impressive 1-1 draw at the Red Bull Arena.

Home goalkeeper Brian Murphy had rarely been tested despite Salzburg's clear superiority as the clock ticked towards full-time.

But in the 87th minute Mark Rossiter's poor header back to Murphy was seized upon by substitute Jezek who nodded a crucial winner into the net.

Salzburg will now face Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb in the third qualifying round.

Meanwhile, Maccabi Haifa completed their two-legged mauling of Northern Irish champions Glentoran.

Following their thrashing in Israel last week the hosts had only pride to play for in the second leg but Yero Bello put the visitors further ahead inside 10 minutes.

It was to Alan McDonald's men's credit that they held firm for the rest of the first half but Haifa's superiority was evident as they dominated the second period at The Oval in Belfast.

Bello made it a brace eight minutes after the interval before Peter Masilela (62) and substitute Shlomi Arbeitman (90) completed the rout.
