REAL PURSUE SPAIN MIDFIELDER

Silva flattered by Madrid interest

June 5, 2009

Valencia midfielder David Silva admits he is flattered by Real Madrid's interest in him but insists he knows nothing about a proposed move to the Bernabeu.

Madrid have made no secret of their desire to sign reported Liverpool target Silva along with his Spain and Valencia team-mate David Villa and club directors met with the 23-year-old's agents for an hour and a half on Thursday.

Silva, who linked up with the Spain squad on Thursday night for the upcoming Confederations Cup, claims he has not yet been told what happened in the meeting.

"I don't know anything about what happened because I was at home in the Canaries and I still haven't talked to my agents," he said. "But Valencia should be calm.

"That a team like Real Madrid are interested is good for Valencia and for me.

"At the moment I am focused on the national team, I hope everything works out well.

"It's flattering that a team like Real Madrid are interested but at the moment I am at Valencia."

Silva penned a new seven-year deal with Valencia last summer that ties him to Los Che until 2013 but the cash-strapped club could be forced to sell him.

Valencia have been hit hard by the economic downturn, which has scuppered their plans to build a new €200m 75,000 capacity stadium, which was supposed to be funded by the sale of land around the Mestalla stadium.

Those sales have not gone through, and in February the club temporarily halted payments to its players as the crisis bit.

Things have not improved at the Mestalla and club president Vicente Soriano resigned on Thursday night, throwing the club further into chaos.
