Sydney FC bracing for reality Czech

April 24, 2009

Sydney FC players are preparing for the most intense of A-League pre-seasons when they begin training under new coach Vitezslav Lavicka next week.

The sky blues report back for duty on Monday with a clean slate after a disappointing 2008/09 season in which they missed the finals for the first time.

And they have been told to expect a full-on first few months with two training sessions per day under their new Czech coach.

"The training schedule is going be quite heavy and I think with (Lavicka) coming from Europe, the intensity - not only in the amount of time you train - but in every session, it's going to be there," Sydney midfielder Simon Colosimo said.

"Naturally whenever a new coach comes there's always that little bit of extra intensity, because everyone wants to sort of impress, but even more so from the sessions that he's going to put on.

"But that's why he's been employed, to bring his experience to Sydney."

Colosimo also predicted Lavicka's assistants, Michal Zach and former captain Tony Popovic, would have a significant impact on training and the club culture.

Popovic joined the coaching staff after being forced into retirement due to injury last year and acted as caretaker coach after John Kosmina was sacked.

"There's a great respect between the players and Tony and the new coach - it's going to be a different club on the field this year, there's no doubt about that," Colosimo said.

"Players will be in a different frame of mind and the intensity will be there every single moment.

"Tony coaches the way he played and that's everything being to perfection and intense and I've heard the new coach is like that too."

Colosimo his hoping for a much happier season after his first campaign with Sydney was cruelled by injury, a groin injury restricting him to just five A-League appearances.

"This season is especially exciting for me individually because I missed pretty much the whole of last season," Colosimo said.

"The body feels good now, there's a few things I'm still working on to make sure I dont have a relapse but I'm feeling good and excited."
