Brazil: Flamengo squander chance to go top

November 2, 2008

Flamengo wasted the chance to go top of the Campeonato Brasileiro as they scraped a 2-2 draw with Portuguesa on Saturday.

Fabio Luciano put the hosts ahead in the fifth minute but after the break Flamengo took their foot off the pedal and consequently Jonas and Athirson put Portuguesa 2-1 ahead.

But seven minutes before the final whistle Maxi Biancucci ensured Flamengo rescued a point.

Both teams ended the match with 10 men with Obina sent off for the hosts and Patrício dismissed for Portugesa.

Flamengo have 57 points, two less than Sao Paulo and Gremio and one behind Cruzeiro and Palmeiras.

Meanwhile, rock-bottom Ipatinga recorded their eighth win in 33 games as they beat Coritiba thanks to a brace by Ferreira while Nautico recorded a narrow 1-0 over Vitoria.
