Estudiantes and Argentinos enjoy victories

October 18, 2008

Estudiantes and Argentinos Juniors warmed up for their Copa Sudamericana quarter-final ties with 2-0 victories over Gimnasia de Jujuy and Huracan respectively in Argentina`s Apertura tournament.

Argentinos climbed off the bottom of the table thanks to goals from midfielder Nestor Ortigoza, who opened the scoring in the 14th minute from the spot, and striker Nicolas Pavlovich, who sealed their first win of the campaign in the second-half.

"This triumph gives us the motivation to continue improving in the Apertura and confidence for the Copa Sudamericana game against Palmeiras," said Argentinos' head coach Nestor Gorosito.

Estudiantes, meanwhile, were made to work hard for their win and had to wait until the 70th minute to break the deadlock as a brilliant long-range strike by Juan Sebastian Veron finally ended Gimnasia`s resistance.

Striker Mauro Boselli doubled the advantage 10 minutes later when he converted a Leandro Benitez cross to seal a fourth consecutive win for the La Plata-based team since Leonardo Astrada took over as head coach.

Estudiantes face Botafogo on Tuesday in the Copa Sudamericana, while Argentinos meet Palmeiras the following day.
