Gremio take advantage of slip-up to go clear

October 9, 2008

PORTO ALEGRE, October 9 (Campeonato Brasileiro) - Gremio took advantage of Palmeiras' failure to win to take the sole lead of the Campeonato Brasileiro on Wednesday.

Both teams began the 29th round with 53 points, but Palmeiras limped to a 0-0 draw with Figueirense before Gremio defeated Santos 2-0.

Uruguayan striker Richard 'Chengue' Morales netted his first goal for Gremio after two minutes before Soares scored a second in stoppage time to secure a two-point advantage at the top of the standings.

Vasco da Gama remain in a precarious position at the foot of the table after conceding a late equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Sport in Recife.

Kassio put the hosts ahead but Leandro Amaral scored twice to put Vasco in control.

However, Ciro equalised late on to deny Vasco a valuable win.
