Fletcher handed armband for Scotland

October 7, 2008

Darren Fletcher will captain Scotland in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Norway.

Scotland boss George Burley has named the Manchester United midfielder as his latest skipper in the absence of Barry Ferguson and Stephen McManus.

Fletcher will wear the armband at Hampden on Saturday on his 40th international appearance.

Burley has lost Kenny Miller, Kris Commons and Kevin Thomson for the vital Group Nine game.

Ranger striker Miller and Derby midfielder Commons have hamstring problems while Rangers midfielder Thomson suffered an ankle injury in Sunday's 1-0 defeat by St Mirren.

Miller has pulled out after Rangers decided to give him an injection to aid a recurring hamstring problem.
