Boca ease into Copa Sudamericana quarters

October 2, 2008

Argentinian giants Boca Juniors eliminated Liga Deportiva Universitaria from the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday after holding the Ecuadorian side to a 1-1 draw in Quito.

Boca held a comfortable lead in the round of 16 tie after a 4-0 victory over the reigning Copa Libertadores champions in the first leg in Buenos Aires last week and the visitors duly increased their advantage with Jesus Datolo converting from the penalty spot just before the half-hour.

Agustin Delgado equalised for the home side with a close range effort in the second half but it proved to be only a consolation as Boca completed a 5-1 aggregate win, setting up a quarter-final clash with Brazilian side Internacional.

The Porto Alegre side were held to a goalless draw at home by Chile's Universidad Catolica but advanced on away goals following last week's 1-1 draw in Santiago.

Another Argentinian side that advanced to the last eight were Argentinos Juniors, who beat Mexican side San Luis Potosi 2-0 at home.

The hosts trailed 2-1 after the first leg but turned things around at Diego Maradona Stadium thanks to a pair of goals early in the second half.

Nicolas Pavlovich turned in a cross by Gabriel Hauche in the 49th minute and Hauche doubled his side's advantage 10 minutes later.

Argentinos will next face Brazilian side Palmeiras, who needed a last minute goal to defeat Sport Ancash.

The teams drew 0-0 in Peru last week but Wanderley Luxemburgo's side struggled to break down the Peruvian side once again.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men in the second half with Sandro Silva seeing red for the home side and and Ubillus dismissed for the visitors after picking up two yellow cards.

With the match seemingly headed for another goalless draw, Jumar went past two defenders before firing home a precision shot to send Palmeiras through.

Botafogo overcame a one-goal deficit, defeating Colombian giants America 3-1 for a 3-2 aggregate win.

Striker Wellington Paulista netted twice for the Brazilian side and Carlos Alberto added another before Jose Velez grabbed a consolation for the visitors 15 minutes from time.

Botafogo will face the winners of the all-Argentinian tie between Estudiantes and Arsenal in the last eight.
