Newcastle slipped to their first defeat of pre-season after Doncaster substitute Stuart Elliott gave his side a one-goal victory at the Keepmoat Stadium.
The Magpies included French trialist Sebastien Bassong in their starting XI
while Geremi captained the side.
But it was the Championship side who claimed victory after Jose
Enrique showed hesitancy in the 87th minute which allowed Elliott to steal in
and curl the ball round United goalkeeper Tim Krul.
• Calvin Zola hit a hat-trick as Premier League ne wboys Hull were thrashed 4-0
by League One Crewe.
Zola put Alex ahead in the second minute from close range before the same
player hit a 25-yard shot into the net just a minute later.
The Tigers had a chance to get back into the game but Bernard Mendy saw his
penalty - awarded for a foul on Nick Barmby - saved by Steve Collis.
The hosts took a three-goal lead when Nicky Maynard hit an unstoppable penalty
with Zola completing the scoring before half-time with another spot-kick after
Bernard Mendy had conceded both penalties.
City boss Phil Brown sent on a completely new XI in the second half but the
damage had been done.
• John Stewart boosted his bid to rescue his Falkirk career by volleying home as
the Bairns saw off Championship visitors QPR.
The striker, who spent last season on loan to St Johnstone and Queen of the
South, converted Neil McCann's corner a minute after Damion Stewart had turned a
Gerard Aafjes cross into his own net.
Falkirk could not add to their early goals despite dominating first-half
possession but QPR improved after the break.
However, the west London side suffered a major fitness concern when Matt
Connolly was carried off with a suspected ankle injury.
• West Brom's winless pre-season run continued with a last-gasp defeat at the
hands of Championship side Ipswich at Portman Road today.
Ishmael Miller put the Baggies in the 40th minute with a superb strike from 20
yards, but the lead was short-lived as the hosts were awarded a penalty three
minutes later.
Jonathan Greening was adjudged to have handled in the box and Tommy Miller
tucked away the spot-kick for Town, who won it when substitute Kevin Lisbie got
away from his man to smash home from 15 yards.
• Manchester City's preparations for their UEFA Cup qualifier were dealt a blow
after they suffered a one-goal defeat to an impressive Hamburg side.
Midfielder Jonathan Pitroipa scored the only goal of the game after he took
control of a loose ball in the box and slotted it past City goalkeeper Joe
Hart.
Pitroipa proved to be a constant threat to the City defence and the Burkino
Faso international could have doubled the German side's lead six minutes later
but he failed to take advantage of a mistake by City captain Richard Dunne.
Mark Hughes' side came out stronger in the second half but failed to take their
chances. Martin Petrov came closest for the visitors but his left-foot shot from
the edge of the penalty area sneaked past the post.
Kasper Schmeichel put in an impressive performance after coming on to replace
Hart at half-time. The Dane pulled off good saves to deny Nigel de Jong and Anis
Ben-Hatira.
City face Faroe Islands side EB/Streymur in the second leg of their UEFA Cup
first qualifying round tie at Barnsley's Oakwell ground on Thursday.
• Cameron Jerome and Martin Taylor scored as Coca-Cola Championship promotion
contenders Birmingham continued their fine pre-season form with a 2-0 win over
League Two Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium.
Freddy Eastwood scored twice on his debut following his transfer from Wolves as
Coventry claimed a 3-1 win at Cambridge.
Danny Fox was also on target for the Sky Blues with Ben Farrell hitting a
consolation penalty for the hosts.
Scott Dobie scored twice as Carlisle played out a 2-2 draw with Preston.
Dobie put the League One side ahead, Preston went 2-1 up through Neil Mellor
and Simon Whaley before Dobie intervened for a second time.
Chris Dickson scored the only goal as Charlton won 1-0 at Brighton.
Brentford and Watford played out a 1-1 draw with Tommy Smith opening the
scoring for the Hornets before Charlie MacDonald equalised.
Leon Clarke scored twice as Sheffield Wednesday maintained their good
pre-season form with a 2-0 win at Bury.
Burnley eased to a 3-0 win at League Two Accrington Stanley with goals from
Joey Gudjonsson, a fine solo effort by Albania international Besart Berisha and
Robbie Blake.
Theo Lewis scored a late equaliser for Cheltenham against Southampton after
Bradley Wright-Phillips had given the Saints a first-half lead.
Darius Henderson scored one goal and made another on his debut for Sheffield
United as the Blades won 2-0 at Scunthorpe.
The former Watford striker provided the cross for Danny Webber to score the
opener before firing in late on.
Relegated Reading claimed a 1-0 win over Swedish side Lerkils IF thanks to a
goal by Shane Long.
Derby, relegated from the Premier League with a record points low last season,
were indebted to goalkeeper Roy Carroll after his last-minute penalty save saw
the Rams claim a 3-2 win at Mansfield.
Alan O'Hare put the hosts ahead before Rob Hulse levelled on his debut
following his move from Sheffield United.
Mark Stallard put Mansfield ahead again but two goals from Tito Villa and Paul
Green edged the Championship side in front.
Ryan Goward had the chance to level for the Stags from the spot but Carroll
saved with his legs.
A Ryan Rhodes goal six minutes from time earned Rotherham a 1-0 win over
Barnsley at Don Valley Stadium.
