Doll pays price for Dortmund disappointment

May 19, 2008

BERLIN, May 19 (Reuters) - Thomas Doll resigned as coach of Borussia Dortmund after the side finished a disappointing 13th in the Bundesliga, the club said on Monday.

Dortmund, the 1997 Champions League winners, said Doll had offered his resignation on Monday after a meeting with club executive Hans-Joachim Watzke and sporting director Michael Zorc.

Doll took over 14 months ago and led Dortmund into the German Cup final, where they were beaten by Bayern Munich. They qualified for the UEFA Cup next season because Bayern will be playing in the Champions League.

'What will stay behind is Thomas Doll's work in keeping us in the Bundesliga and qualifying for the UEFA Cup through reaching the German Cup final,' said Watzke in a statement.

Dortmund conceded 62 league goals last season, more than any other Bundesliga side.
