Newcastle and Tottenham to meet in China?

March 1, 2008

Newcastle could be heading to China this summer for a high-profile friendly against Tottenham.

Owner Mike Ashley and close friend Paul Kemsley are understood to be in the process of trying to arrange the clash in Beijing ahead of this summer's Olympic Games.

The plan, which has been run past Premier League chiefs, is being implemented as the debate on controversial plans to play a 39th round of league games overseas rumbles on.

Ashley's Sports Direct group is eyeing the lucrative Chinese market, and his guests at last weekend's 5-1 defeat to Manchester United included several Chinese businessmen.

Newcastle have made inroads into the Far East market before, playing games in Hong Kong and Malaysia, and it was during a pre-season trip to Bangkok in 1996 that Keegan announced the club had clinched a £15million world record deal to take Alan Shearer to St James' Park from Blackburn.
