Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of Honduras left-back Maynor Figueroa on loan until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.
Figueroa, 24, arrives from Deportivo Olimpia - the club from which Wigan signed Wilson Palacios - following a three-week trial with the Latics.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce said: 'He's
strong, he's quick, he has a superb left foot and I think he has the attributes
to adapt to the English game.
'He's shown his desire to be with us by being away from his family all over
Christmas and has shown plenty of potential in training.'
Bruce saw off competition from other clubs including interest from the United
States and Mexico to land Figueroa.
'It's always a nervous time when you make a proposal to a player and you know
he has a choice of clubs, but he has committed himself to us, which is
pleasing,' Bruce said.
Figueroa has acquired a work permit to play for the Latics.
And the 47-cap international said: 'I have always had an ambition to play in
England and now I have a chance to prove myself in what I consider to be the
best league in the world.
'I am excited by the challenge.'
