Togo stadium ban after Mali player attack

October 18, 2007

ACCRA, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have placed an indefinite ban on Togo's Kegue stadium following attacks on Mali players after a key African Nations Cup qualifier last Friday.

Any further sanctions would be a matter for CAF's disciplinary committee, officials said on Thursday, after spectators attacked opposing players and pelted the field with missiles in Lome.

The stadium ban followed a meeting in Accra of the CAF executive committee on the eve of the African Nations Cup finals draw on Friday.

Mali striker Frederic Kanoute and Mamady Sidibe were both injured after being set upon by Togolese supporters after they helped their team to a 2-0 away win and a place at the tournament in Ghana.

The result denied Togo, who reached last year's World Cup in Germany, a trip to the finals being held from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10.

No date has yet been set for the next CAF disciplinary committee meeting but CAF general secretary Mustapha Fahmy said on Thursday it would probably be held in Cairo in November.
