BUENOS AIRES, June 10 (Reuters) - San Lorenzo beat Arsenal 4-2 at home on Sunday to win Argentina's Clausura championship.
Boca Juniors' 1-0 win at Belgrano had briefly threatened
the leaders, but San Lorenzo restored the four point gap with
one game to spare. The last time that San Lorenzo lifted a
title was in 2001, when Chilean coach Manual Pellegrini was in
command.
Goals from defender Cristian Tula and striker Ezequiel
Lavezzi put San Lorenzo in command early but Arsenal striker
Ivan Obolo silenced the home crowd with two headed goals.
San Lorenzo striker Gaston Fernandez rekindled the
celebrations with a brace in the second half, the first from
the penalty spot.
Bruno Marioni's goal was enough to secure Boca Junior's win
against relegation-threatened Belgrano, but his team mates
seemed more focused on Wednesday's Libertadores Cup final clash
with Brazil's Gremio.
Independiente ended a run of poor results with an emphatic
4-1 win over relegated Quilmes, who had defender Damian Musto
sent off after 20 minutes.
River Plate's 2-2 draw with Nueva Chicago on Saturday was
interrupted for more than 20 minutes due to a confrontation
between players and officials.
Nueva Chicago marched into a two-goal lead and seemed set
to collect the three points that would ensure safety from
relegation.
River, in need of a point to qualify for the Libertadores
Cup, got a goal back through Ernesto Farias with 10 minutes
remaining before referee Rafael Furchi awarded them a free kick
with a minute of injury time left -- then changed his mind and
awarded a penalty.
Players and coaching staff from both clubs became embroiled
in a row over the incident.
Paulo Ferrari eventually converted the spot kick, but had
to repeat the feat when it emerged that the wrong 11 men were
on the pitch for Nueva Chicago during his first attempt.
