Mathis traded to the New York Red Bulls
The Colorado Rapids have traded Clint Mathis to the New York Red Bulls, ESPN.com has learned. Sources close to Mathis confirmed the deal, but complete details of the transaction have not been disclosed.
The 30 year-old Mathis is expected to join NYRB in Charleston, South Carolina where the team is training through Sunday in preparation for their season opener against the Columbus Crew on April 7.
Mathis is reuniting with NYRB head coach Bruce Arena, under whom he earned the first of his 46 U.S. national team caps on Nov. 6, 1998 in a 0-0 tie with Australia. In 2002, Mathis was the U.S. national team's leading scorer and played in three matches in the 2002 World Cup scoring against South Korea in the USA's 1-1 tie during group play.
This is Mathis' fifth team in eight MLS seasons and second stint in New York. Mathis was traded midway thru the 2000 season from Los Angeles to the Metrostars where he played through the 2003 season.
In 2000, Mathis finished second in the league in scoring and earned Radio Shack MLS Best XI honors.
