Louis Saha has signed a lucrative extension to his contract which will keep him at Manchester United until 2010.
Although the France forward's previous deal was not due to expire for another
two full seasons after the present campaign, the move represents confirmation of
Saha's elevation to senior status within Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.
Having taken on the role of number one striker following the departure of Ruud
van Nistelrooy in the summer, Saha has responded in superb fashion and the
28-year-old currently tops the United scoring charts with 12 goals.
'It is great news,' Saha told the club's website.
'I am really enjoying my time here and I wanted to show my commitment to
Manchester United and also repay the faith that Sir Alex has shown in me.
'Hopefully we will have an exciting end to the season and add some silverware
to the trophy room.'
Free of the injuries which cursed him for almost two years following his arrival
from Fulham in January 2004, Saha has become a vitally important member of
United's squad.
Only a fortnight ago, Ferguson admitted his heart was in his mouth every time
the Frenchman went in for a challenge.
Although Saha continues to be troubled by bad luck - he missed the World Cup
final through suspension and failed to convert a last-minute penalty at Celtic
last month - his pace, power and aerial threat mean he is now established as one
of the Premiership's top strikers.
With Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney also committing themselves to Old
Trafford on long-term contracts recently, it means Ferguson has secured the
services of his current strikeforce for the foreseeable future.
'I am delighted we have extended Louis' contract,' said Ferguson.
'We are happy to see Louis here until at least 2010 and to add him to the
players who have recently signed new contracts like Cristiano and Wayne.
'We address the situation of players' contracts now and then in order to
strengthen the club and it's great to add Louis to the list.
'Louis' form has been fantastic since he has come back from injury and he has
scored 26 goals in that time.'
