Sao Paulo beat Figueirense in Rogerio's 700th game

October 28, 2006

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Brazilian championship leaders Sao Paulo won 2-0 at Figueirense on Saturday in goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni's 700th appearance for the club.

Sao Paulo have 63 points from 31 games and restored their seven-point lead over Internacional, who had closed the gap by beating Juventude 1-0 on Wednesday.

Vanderlei Luxemburgo's Santos beat lowly Sao Caetano 1-0 to go third, a further point behind Internacional.

It was another historic day for Rogerio, who earlier this year became the world's highest-scoring goalkeeper by surpassing Paraguay's Jose Luis Chilavert's total of 62 goals.

But some of the gloss was taken off the occasion when Rogerio - who captained the team that won the Libertadores Cup and Club World championship last year - was ordered to change his bright yellow jersey, because it clashed with the referee's.

'It was a commemorative shirt, but the referee thought it was better that I changed it,' said Rogerio, who made his debut in 1993.

Without a spare, Rogerio played the match with a borrowed shirt bearing the name of his understudy Bosco.

Sao Paulo went ahead through striker Aloisio's near-post header from a corner in the 21st minute, and extended their lead in first-half injury time when Souza's shot rebounded off a defender and fell kindly for Ilsinho to fire home.

Santos, champions in 2002 and 2004, needed a second-half goal from midfielder Rodrigo Tabata to condemn Sao Caetano to their ninth consecutive defeat.

Sao Caetano, where Dorival Junior is the sixth coach of the year, are 19th in the table with 26 points. The bottom four go down.

Ponte Preta, 17th with 33 points, also stayed in the danger zone after losing 2-1 at home to Botafogo.

Around 50 angry fans protested outside the boardroom after the game and television pictures showed riot police using rubber bullets to disperse them. No injuries or arrests were reported.

Police also fired rubber bullets at Goias fans who hurled bottles, flip flops, belts and mobile phones onto the field in a protest at the referee.

The fans were angry at a penalty award that led to Cruzeiro's second goal in the 30th minute and the decision to send off goalkeeper Harlei in the same incident.

All five goals in Cruzeiro's 3-2 win came in the first half.
