Joseph and Martins suspended and fined by MLS

October 24, 2006

NEW YORK -- Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph was suspended one game Tuesday for elbowing an opponent in the ribs, and will miss the second leg of New England's playoff series against the Chicago Fire on Saturday.

Major League Soccer announced the suspension after reviewing video that showed Joseph jabbing his elbow hard into the ribs of Fire midfielder Ivan Guerrero during Sunday's Eastern Conference semifinal, which Chicago won 1-0.

It was Joseph's first appearance for New England since Sept. 13. He had been recovering from right hand surgery. The league also fined him $500.

Colorado forward Thiago Martins will also miss the second leg of his team's playoff series against FC Dallas for a red card in the Rapids' 2-1 loss Saturday. Video shows Martins throwing an elbow into the neck or face of a defender who was clutching him from behind.

The league added a $250 fine to his punishment Tuesday for "the violent nature of his conduct."
