U.S. captain Claudio Reyna is fully fit for opener

NORDERSTEDT, Germany (AP) -- U.S. captain Claudio Reyna is fully fit for next week's World Cup opener against the Czech Republic.

Reyna played Monday night as the United States defeated Angola 1-0 in a closed-door scrimmage, the midfielder's first action against an opponent since injuring his right hamstring May 23 against Morocco. He resumed training Saturday, a day after the United States arrived in Germany.

"Everything has really gone to plan, which is nice," Reyna said Tuesday. "Now it's just full steam ahead."

U.S. coach Bruce Arena said his team didn't have any injury concerns ahead of Monday's opener.

"I think we're right on schedule, moving along towards June 12," he said. "That's when we're going to find out if our preparations have gone well. What we say right now doesn't mean a whole lot June 12 unless we show it on the field."

Brian McBride scored the U.S. goal against Angola about midway through the first half, on a header off a cross from the right, teammate Eddie Lewis said.

About 20 U.S. players appeared in the game, according to Arena, who made substitutions at the start of the second half and about 60 minutes in.

Reyna wouldn't divulge how long he played, adding he had been instructed not to give details.

Lewis played both left back and midfield, and he said several other players appeared in multiple positions.

"Our organization was good and our movement did a good job keeping the ball on the ground," Lewis said. "It would have been nice to maybe score another goal or two, but in general we created some good chances, and I think as far as the exercise was concerned, it was definitely a success."

Lewis didn't fully participate in training Tuesday, limiting himself to running.

"I just played quite a few minutes yesterday,'' he said.

Notes

Arena wouldn't say whether MF Bobby Convey would start, but he expects the left-footed player will see action. "I don't know whether he'll be in our first 11 or not, but he'll certainly be a guy that's going to be stepping on the field," Arena said.
