Leeds tops Preston North End, reaches promotion finals
PRESTON, England -- Leeds advanced to the final of the promotion playoffs for a spot in the English Premier League next season, beating Preston North End 2-0 Monday night on goals by Rob Hulse and Frazer Richardson.
Leeds, which starts American Eddie Lewis in the midfield, won the home-and-home, total-goals series 3-1 and will play Watford or Crystal Palace on May 21 at Cardiff, Wales, for a Premier League berth. Watford hosts its second leg Tuesday after winning 3-0 on the road.
The United States starts its pre-World Cup training camp Wednesday in Cary, N.C., and Lewis won't report until after the promotion final.
The start of the second half was delayed 25 minutes because of a light failure
