Chelsea captain John Terry has been ruled out of Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester United, having not sufficiently recovered from a knee injury.
• Terry stripped of England captaincy
• Utd boosted by returning quartet
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas confirmed Terry would miss the game in a press conference on Friday, adding to what was already a bad news day for the 31-year-old.
The announcement followed the decision of the Football Association to strip Terry of the England captaincy - a message conveyed in a phone call from FA chief David Bernstein.
Terry is set face charges of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in July, and the FA decided to withdraw his eligibility for the England captaincy until the matter is settled. He will remain available to play for England, however, and will thus be available for selection for the Euro 2012 tournament this summer.
Terry's position as Chelsea captain is unaffected, and he would have hoped to take the field against United on Sunday after missing their 1-1 draw with Swansea. But now that is out of the question, it may mean a debut for Chelsea's new signing Gary Cahill.
