ESPN's World Club Top 25

May 3, 2005

Chelsea clinched their first English league title in 50 years with a 2-0 win over Bolton on the weekend. With the victory, Chelsea remain in the top spot in the ESPN World Club Top 25 - a spot that coach Jose Mourinho's side has held since December.

Bayern Munich moved into the top 5 after clinching the Bundesliga title on the weekend. Roy Makaay netted a hat trick in Bayern's 4-0 win over Kaiserslautern.

In Champions League semifinal action, Milan took a 2-0 lead over PSV in last week's first leg while Chelsea and Liverpool played to a scoreless draw.

Milan and Juventus are also in a dogfight in the race for the Scudetto in Italy. Both clubs are level on points heading into this weekend's top of the table clash at the San Siro.

Barcelona continue to hold a six point lead over Real Madrid with four weeks remaining in the Liga Primera season.

Sporting Lisbon took a 2-1 lead over AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of the semifinals of the UEFA Cup. Sporting are looking to advance to the final, which will take place in Lisbon on May 18.

Defending Brazilian champions Santos are off to a strong start in the Brazilian Championship.

The group stage of the Copa Libertadores is coming to an end. River Plate are hoping to conclude the first round with a perfect record this week.

  • The ESPN World Club Top 25, a computer-based ranking of the world's top clubs, was developed by the staff at ESPN International in 1999. Now in its fifth season, the Top 25 formula takes into consideration performances in league, continental and cup competitions.

The Top 25 is released every Monday night throughout the football club season.
