Experienced defender who made his international debut against Turkey more than nine years ago.
The lynchpin at the heart of Valencia's defence during their march to the Champions League final, the centre-back managed to keep players of the calibre of Patrick Kluivert and Rivaldo quiet for the most part as Barcelona were ousted in the semi-final. He may choose to forget the final itself.
What he lacks in pace he makes up for in positional sense, although seemed to go missing too readily as Slovenia struck up a three-goal lead in the incredible Group C opener.
Dealt well with the Norweigian aerial bombardment before both Spain and co-hosts Holland laid seige to the Yugoslav penalty area in the final group match and quarter-final.
