Hakan Sukur

Position:
Forward
Sukur

(MarkThompson/Allsport)

Shirt No: 9
Age: 28
Caps: 56
Goals: 28
Club: Galatasaray

Profile:

Almost certainly the best ever Turkish striker, Galatasaray's Hakan Sukur ran the Leeds backline ragged and scored in both legs of their UEFA Cup semi-final. Nigel Martyn will remember him well.

He then led the line against Arsenal in the Final as the Turkish side won the trophy.

Members of the Arsenal defence who made it to England's Euro 2000 squad will, like Martyn, recall his explosive strength and eye for goal.

With 26 goals on the international stage, every defence in the tournament will need to be at their most diligent to stubb out the threat of the 'Bull of the Bosphorus'.

Received little or no service in either the 2-1 defeat to Italy or the dismal goalless draw with Sweden in the opening two group matches.

But he became the hero of the hour against Belgium as he grabbed a brace to take them through and knock out the co-hosts

Played against Portugal while obviously carrying an injury and could not breach the Portugese defence.
