Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 10:02 PM GMT Gaizka Mendieta
The midfield dictator of Valencia's stunning season, Mendieta has emerged as a player of true world class ability in the last 12 months. He may not be a first choice come the summer - he made only five substitute appearances in qualifying - but will act as an ideal replacement for Guardiola if the Barcelona ace picks up a knock. Makes the Valencia midfield tick and has every quality to suggest he can do the same on the international stage. Hardly had time to make an impact as a late sub against Norway. Powerhouse performance against Slovenia. Very creative down either flank against Yugoslavia and scored from the penalty spot to put Spain level in extra-time. Scored Spain's only goal against France in the quarter-finals from the penalty spot. Struggled to get the better of Lizarazu for a large part of the game and was obviously disappointed when he was subbed in the 56th minute for Urzaiz.
