Something of a utility player, in that he can play in either midfield or defence.
Replaced his clubmate and intyernational captain Fernando Hierro in the final warm-up game against Sweden and expected to see action during the Finals, most likely coming on as a substitute.
Such was the case against Norway, when he replaced Valeron for the last ten minutes. Also came on against Slovenia.
Worked hard in the middle against France in the quarter-finals. Struggled sometimes against the likes of Deschamps, Vieira and Dugarry, but who wouldn't?
