Nicknamed 'The Kaiser' due to his similarities to Franz Beckenbauer, Lupescu operates as either a defensive midfielder or sweeper.
He made his debut in a friendly against Israel in February 1988 and has been a regular ever since, while his club career has taken him to Dynamo, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Moenchengladbach.
