Updated Thursday July 13, 2000, 10:00 PM GMT Adrian Ilie
The bright young star of Romanian football left the 1998 World Cup with his reputation greatly enhanced. Having scored the goal that beat Colombia in the group stages, he tormented the England rearguard with his dangerous mix of pace and skill. A move to Valencia was his reward and he made an immediate impact in Spain with nine goals in his first ten games. Ironically, Ilie started life as a midfielder and was converted to a striking role whilst at Galatasaray. Nicknamed 'The Cobra', he scored five goals in six Euro 2000 qualifiers and helped Valencia to runners-up spot in the Champions League. Impressive during the 1-1 draw with Germany in Liege, though he may come to regret being booked for arguing with the referee. Had few oppurtunities to score in the Portugal game and was substituted in the 78th minute. Missed a great chance to score in the first-half, picked up a booking and will miss their next game.
