A member of the Steaua Bucharest team which won four league titles from 1993 to 1996, he initially followed Gheorghes Hagi and Popescu to Turkey to play for Galatasaray.
However, more recently he has endured a season of struggle in Spain with Real Betis, culminating in relegation to the Second Division.
Capable of playing in midfield or at full-back, Filipescu excels in a containing role and was a regular at the 1998 World Cup. Brilliantly contained Bierhoff in the first game against Germany - much to his opponent's disgust and dismay.
Suffered from lack of match practice, but linked up well with Hagi - while he was on the pitch, anyway!
