Another former Dynamo Bucharest star, Contra has played his part in Alaves' remarkable success in the Primera Liga this season.
A right-back of some skill, he has found the way barred to his preferred position by Dan Petrescu and has featured sporadically since making his debut in April 1996. Witness his appearance half way through the second-half of the draw with Germany when he replaced Petrescu.
But his chances have improved with the appointment of Emerich Jenei as national coach.
