The dark horse of the tournament. Rated one of the best young players to emerge in the Portuguese game in recent seasons, he joined Benfica from Boavista in 1997, a year after making his international debut against France. Several European giants are reported to be keeping an eye on his progress. Scored the winning goal in Portugal's 3-2 win over England, which was also his first international goal. Made lots of chances for himself all match and had another goal disallowed for offside. Played well against Romania until he was substituted. Given a second-half run out against the Germans. Scored two against Turkey but should have scored more, will be tested when his chances are limited. Scored an absolute cracker against France in the semi-final and should have had another one in the second half. For a man who came into the tournament not being able to score, he has done very well indeed.
