Born in South Africa of Portuguese immigrant parents, he has been around the international scene since making his debut in a 7-0 win against Liechtenstein in 1995.
Played for Academica and FC Porto before hitting the big-time with Benfica. His form there earned him a move to Juventus but he never settled with the Italian giants. Likely to start in Euro 2000 matches.
Played a big part in keeping Alan Shearer and Michael Owen from troubling the Portugal defence in their opening game.
Has had a quiet tournament and was subbed against the French before extra-time after shackling Anelka for much of the game.
